The Africa Cup of Nations returns to East Africa for the first time since 1976. Football below, Kilimanjaro above.
What is AFCON 2027?
AFCON 2027 — officially the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Pamoja 2027 — is the 36th edition of Africa's biggest football tournament. It runs from 19 June to 17 July 2027 and is co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Pamoja is Swahili for “together”, and this is the first time three nations have shared the tournament.
It is also the first Africa Cup of Nations staged in East Africa since Ethiopia hosted in 1976. Twenty-four national teams compete, with the three hosts qualifying automatically.
Where the football happens in Tanzania
Tanzania's tournament home is the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. At around 60,000 seats it is the largest venue of the tournament, and it hosts the opening match and opening ceremony. CAF confirms the detailed fixture list closer to the tournament, so we build trips that stay flexible around match days rather than locking you to a fixture that may still move.
Why AFCON 2027 is the perfect time to climb Kilimanjaro
The tournament falls in the best trekking window of the year. June and July are peak dry season on Mount Kilimanjaro: stable weather, clear summit views and the most reliable conditions of the calendar. It is the same stretch that experienced climbers deliberately book for.
Our Kilimanjaro routes run between six and nine days, so a climb fits comfortably either side of the group stage. Dar es Salaam to Kilimanjaro International Airport is roughly a 1 hour 20 minute flight, which puts Moshi, the mountain and the northern safari circuit within easy reach of the football.
