Kilimanjaro Route Maps
Kilimanjaro Route Map
A three-dimensional sense of how each trail approaches Uhuru Peak.
Mount Kilimanjaro is approached from three sides. The map below describes, in words, how each established route reaches the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

How the routes approach the summit
- From the south — Marangu (south-east), Machame and Umbwe converge on the southern circuit toward Barafu, then Stella Point and Uhuru Peak.
- From the west — Lemosho and Shira cross the Shira Plateau, join the Machame line at Lava Tower and follow the southern circuit. The Northern Circuit swings around the quiet northern slopes.
- From the north — Rongai climbs the drier north-eastern side via Mawenzi Tarn and the Saddle to Kibo Hut, summiting via Gilman's Point.
- Descent — the Mweka route is used for descent from all western and southern routes; Marangu and Rongai descend via the Marangu trail.
