Tanzania Travel Info

Everything you need to know before you travel — money, climate, health, language and more.

Currency & money

The Tanzanian Shilling is the local currency, but US dollars (cash) and travellers' cheques are recommended. Change money at a Bureau de Change for better rates than hotels or banks. Bring US$ notes in good condition and dated 2009 or later. Credit cards are accepted only by major airlines and larger hotels, often with a surcharge — treat them as a back-up, not your main source of cash.

Climate

There are two rainy seasons: the long rains (late March to June), which fall in heavy downpours, and the short rains (November to mid-January), which are usually much lighter.

Health & vaccinations

A Yellow Fever certificate is required only if you arrive from a country with risk of transmission. Tanzania has a moderate malaria risk below 1,800 m — consult your doctor about prophylaxis (note some malaria tablets cannot be combined with Diamox). Hepatitis A and Typhoid immunisations are sensible precautions. Always check with a travel clinic before you fly.

Insurance

Travel insurance is strongly advised and should cover baggage, personal accident and medical care — and specifically your Kilimanjaro expedition, including helicopter evacuation up to 6,000 m. See our Search & Rescue page for details.

Language

The official languages are Kiswahili and English, alongside more than 120 tribal languages. A few Swahili words go a long way — see our Swahili Terms page.

Electricity

The supply is 230 V, 50 Hz. Most hotels use UK-style three-flat-pin plugs (BS1363); bring an international adapter.

Security

As anywhere, avoid walking alone at night and use hotel taxis. Keep cash and valuables in a safe-deposit box and do not leave anything of value in your room.

Customs

Travellers over 18 may import, duty free: 200 cigarettes (or 50 cigars / 250 g tobacco), one bottle of spirits and 500 ml of perfume. Exporting gold, diamonds, tanzanite (unless bought from a licensed jeweller) and items made from wildlife, shells or coral is prohibited.

An onward ticket and sufficient funds are required when entering Tanzania. Visas are required by most visitors — see our Visa & Travel Docs page. A full list of Tanzanian diplomatic missions worldwide is available from us on request. Regulations can change without notice, so please re-check before travelling.
