Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes
Seven established routes lead to Uhuru Peak. Here is how to choose the one that fits your pace, budget and travel style.
There are seven established routes up Mount Kilimanjaro — Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, Northern Circuit and Umbwe. Marangu, Machame and Umbwe approach from the south; Lemosho, Shira and the Northern Circuit from the west; and Rongai from the north. Mweka is used for descent only. Generally, the longer the route, the better your body acclimatises — and the higher your chance of summiting.

The only northern approach. Quiet, remote wilderness and the best choice in the rainy season as the north side stays drier.

The steepest, most direct and most challenging route, famous for its caves. For very strong, experienced trekkers only.

Longer routes usually give your body more time to adapt to altitude.
Shira and the Northern Circuit (8–9 days, the longest and quietest profile) can be arranged on request. No technical climbs or activities such as paragliding, cycling or skiing are permitted on Kilimanjaro.
