Mount Meru: The Perfect Warm-Up Before Kilimanjaro
Often overlooked in Kilimanjaro's shadow, Mount Meru (4,562 m) is one of Tanzania's most rewarding treks — and a superb way to acclimatise before tackling the big one.
Why climb Meru first?
Spending a few days at altitude on Meru primes your body for Kilimanjaro, improving your comfort and summit chances. It's also simply a beautiful, quieter mountain with dramatic crater scenery.
Wildlife on the trail
Meru sits inside Arusha National Park, so the lower slopes are alive with wildlife — you may see buffalo, giraffe, colobus monkeys and more, escorted by an armed park ranger on the first day.
What to expect
- A 3–4 day trek, typically staying at Miriakamba and Saddle Huts
- A spectacular knife-edge summit ridge with views across to Kilimanjaro
- A genuine sense of wilderness with far fewer climbers
