Meet the Porters: The Heroes of Kilimanjaro

25 January 2026 5 min read Kilimanjaro Climbing Agency

Ask anyone who has climbed Kilimanjaro and they'll tell you: the porters are the real heroes of the mountain. Their strength, skill and good humour make the whole experience possible.

What the crew does

While you carry only a daypack, the porters carry the tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, food, water, cookware, stoves, medical supplies, tables and chairs — and still arrive at camp before you to set everything up. The cook prepares fresh, hot meals that surprise many first-time climbers.

Ethical treatment matters

  • Fair wages and reasonable loads (a 15 kg limit per climber's gear)
  • Proper mountain clothing, footwear and equipment
  • Nutritious food and safe sleeping conditions on the mountain

Tipping & respect

Tipping is a respected tradition and an important part of your crew's income. We hold a tipping ceremony at the end of every climb once everyone is safely down. See our tipping guide for recommended amounts, and our guides & porters page to learn more about the team behind your summit.
